[edit] Choose data size
No matter which way you choose to install, you must decide how much of the game data you'd like to get. There are two options, the minimal data set and the full data set. When downloading, make sure to only download one set of data.
[edit] Minimal data
The minimal data set only includes four cars and three tracks. It is usually around 20-30 megabytes in size.
[edit] Full data
The full data set includes all the cars that have mostly finished exteriors and good specifications, and all the tracks, at the time of the release. The full data packages are about 150 megabytes in size.

Note: In the past VDrift was distributed as a tarball with a shell script inside which performed the install. If you have a package like this, please delete it and get the latest version. |
[edit] Check your distribution
VDrift is available through packaging systems for several distributions now. Check your distribution's repositories, as well as community forums, for an available version before trying another installation method. This will be the easiest way to get the game. Note the version, and make sure you're getting the most recent.
[edit] autopackage
VDrift's official binary is released as an autopackage. This is a next-generation package format for Linux which aims to help build and distribute applications that work on every Linux distribution. Download the .package file for the latest version from the VDrift downloads page.
Installing an autopackage is very simple. There is a good explanation how to install an autopackage on the autopackage web site. Basically, after downloading the file, set the file's permissions so that it can be executed, and then run it.
[edit] Other package formats
Occasionally distribution-specific packages are available with a release. Check the VDrift downloads page for availability and consult your distribution's documentation for installation instructions.
